Sopra Steria – Design Thinking Workshop and Course

On the bright sunny, morning of November 27tharound 20of us, Sopra Steria customersand partners, attended a Design Thinking Workshop, which had been tailored for SAP users. Those who have attended Sopra Steria events before will know that on a clear, fine day such as we had on the 27th, Sopra’s premises have the most stunning viewavailable of Oslo fjordand the surrounding city.

Design Thinkinghas been slowly evolving since the 1960’sand there are numerous claimantsto being its originator. Despite the confused origins, one thing is clear is that Stanford Universityhas played a major role in its conception and further development. Our host for the morning was Anne Holmefrom the SAP group in Sopra Steria, and she did a fine job at the start and end of the event to explain the natural emergence of Design Thinking into SAP’s latest portfolio of products.

Ourworkshop leader, Theodor Henriksen, led the proceedings at a rapid pace, where he outlined the theoryand reasoning behind Design Thinking. We then embarked on a series of practical exerciseswhich were aimed at helping us to thinkand act like a designer. The main practical exercise, conducted in pairs, was based on the established, Stanford 5 step model:

  1. Empathise– interview customers, then dig deeper to understand
  2. Define– Major findings and hypothesis statements
  3. Ideate– ideas for potential solutions then share and listen
  4. Prototype– Quick prototypes from what you have learnt - prioritise
  5. Test– Build and test the priority physical prototype

By the end of this exercise, it was clear that there is some substance to this approach in not only solving any type of problembut also in the developmentof high quality productsthat meet customer needs. In fact, Sopra Steria told us that they are taking this approach in a number of SAP projects particularly where they are doing Fiori development.

If you have not attendeda workshop or course in Design Thinking I would recommendit, even if it is only to gain further insight into how SAP are developingtheir future products.
